How do maritime internal audits help my business?
Audits evaluate the effectiveness of management, safety, and security systems. They focus on safety management systems (SMS), procedures, operational processes, documentation, crew training, compliance with company and external policies and regulations. Internal audits measure the effectiveness of the system before the external audit. This helps the company identify deficiencies and implement organic corrective actions, thereby reducing non-conformities. This helps ensure the implementation of company policies and procedures and strengthens overall risk management. Effective record keeping provides auditable and verifiable documentation to demonstrate the implementation and maintenance of the system.
What safety management systems can SafeShip Services help implement?
We support implementation and compliance for ISM Code systems, SMS procedures, emergency response plans, garbage management plans, energy efficiency plans, and vessel-specific operating manuals tailored to your fleet or operation.
Can SafeShip Services perform gap analysis audits?
Yes — our gap analysis surveys identify deficiencies, areas of non-conformance and opportunities for improvement before formal inspections by Administration, Class, P&I or port state control. This provides the early opportunity to identify observations and deficiencies and implement corrective actions.
What is the International Safety Management (ISM) Code and why is it important?
The purpose of the ISM Code is to provide an international standard for the safe management and operation of ships and for managing pollution prevention. The ISM Code was made mandatory by the 1994 amendments to SOLAS, specifically through the introduction of Chapter IX: “Management for the Safe Operation of Ships”. It is the result of preventable maritime casualties which resulted in the significant loss of human life and pollution to the marine environment. The ISM Code is mandatory for ships in international trade over 500 gross tons. Many flag states and P&I clubs require vessels under 500 gross tons to have mini-safety management systems (mini-ISM), they recognize the Code as a structure for the implementation and maintenance of industry rules, regulations and best practices. The ISM Code is self-prescriptive, that is the company establishes the objectives, policies and procedures in which it intends to comply with the rules and regulations which govern the industry.
Does SafeShip Services provide security code compliance consulting?
Yes — in compliance with the International Ship and Port Facility Security Code (ISPS) and the Maritime Transportation Security Act (MTSA), we provide vulnerability assessments, periodic audits, training, and guidance to help operators meet or exceed compliance with International Codes and Federal Regulations. SafeShip Services has performed vulnerability assessments and audits for one of the largest superyacht marinas and repair facilities in South Florida, a passenger ship terminal, a petroleum storage terminal, and a container-mixed-use cargo port. SafeShip Services worked closely with the operator of the petroleum storage terminal, making extensive
revisions to their facility security plan based on changes to their business model, a reduction in port footprint, a reduction in human resources, coupled to an increase in surveillance and lighting capabilities. Classroom and practical hands-on training were also delivered. Our assessments and audits include illumination and lighting assessment surveys. SafeShip Services has written security plans for a SOLAS PYLC yacht and an operator of towing vessels.
What is included in a maritime navigation assessment and audit?
Navigation assessments can be used to identify poor practices and to monitor the bridge teams reaction to evolving navigational situations and challenges. The assessment will observe and evaluate the practices and skill sets of the individuals and while working as a bridge team. It verifies bridge culture, communication, and best practices and helps identify improvements in
navigation practices. It assures the company that high standards of navigation and watchkeeping are being maintained. Navigation audits monitor knowledge of regulatory and company requirements. They are assessed on their knowledge of compliance with regulations and company policies, procedures, and record keeping.
Does SafeShip Services assist with emergency preparedness plans?
Yes—we assist with writing and reviewing shipboard and office procedural checklists and contingency plans. Things don’t always go according to plan. And when they don’t, there need to be contingency plans onboard to initiate a response and report the situation, and office contingency plans with the information and resources handily available to contact and provide appropriate support and services to the vessel in its response to emergency situations. These cover, but are not limited to: fire and emergency, abandon ship, man overboard, towing, grounding, flooding, loss of propulsion or steering, medical emergency, security, piracy, heavy weather, and oil pollution incidents.
How does SafeShip Services help with maritime regulatory compliance?
We have the regulatory knowledge and experience in the CFRs, SOLAS, STCW, MARPOL, ISM, ISPS, MTSA MLC, HAZMAT and other national and international regulations, helping ensure our clients achieve compliance.
Can SafeShip Services assist in preparing for Port State Control inspections?
Yes — we conduct pre-inspection surveys, identify and correct deficiencies, and act on behalf of vessel managers and owners during inspections to mitigate findings, reduce risk, and the potential for deficiencies or detention.
